Best silver bar brands: the guide

Published on 2026-07-15 · By Bertrand Mathieu

Not all silver bar brands are worth the same at resale. Choosing a recognised refiner guarantees purity, international acceptance and a resale free of any “doubt discount”. Here are the reference brands, and how to tell them apart.

Criterion #1: LBMA accreditation

The first filter is accreditation by the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association), which lists the refiners whose bars are accepted on the global market. A bar from a Good Delivery refiner is bought back with confidence anywhere. How these refineries operate is detailed in silver foundry.

At identical spot price and purity (999 ‰), the metal value is the same whatever the brand: what sets refiners apart is reputation, finish, security and local liquidity.

The Swiss refiners (the most renowned)

Switzerland is home to the most prestigious refiners:

  • PAMP — the Lady Fortuna, Veriscan authentication, worldwide reputation.
  • Valcambi — one of the largest refiners, inventor of the divisible CombiBar.
  • Argor-Heraeus — refined finishes and security technologies.
  • Metalor — a historic refiner founded in the 19th century.

The German refiners

  • Heraeus — an industrial precious-metals giant based in Hanau.
  • Geiger Edelmetalle — renowned for its premium-finish bars and anti-counterfeiting features.
  • Heimerle + Meule — one of the oldest German refineries (Pforzheim).

The most liquid brands at resale

If the goal is wealth preservation or trading, favour the brands most universally recognised by trading professionals:

  1. PAMP
  2. Valcambi
  3. Heraeus
  4. Geiger
  5. Royal Canadian Mint
  6. Royal Mint
  7. Metalor
  8. Argor-Heraeus
  9. Scottsdale Mint
  10. Asahi Refining

This ranking reflects reputation and ease of resale in Europe, not a difference in metal value (identical at equal purity).

And France?

France has historically kept a low profile in this market: the great reference was the Compagnie des Métaux Précieux, but there is no longer a major French producer of consumer silver bars comparable to the Swiss or German ones.

How to choose in practice

  • To accumulate at the lowest cost: a large cast bar from an LBMA refiner (minimal premium).
  • For fractional resale: a minted format or a CombiBar from a highly recognised brand.
  • In every case: keep the seal and certificate, and compare the premium as a percentage, never the gross price.

In summary

  • Aim for an LBMA-accredited refiner: purity and liquidity guaranteed.
  • Swiss (PAMP, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, Metalor) and German (Heraeus, Geiger) lead the field.
  • At equal purity, the metal value is identical; the brand affects resale.
  • Keep the seal and certificate, compare the premium.
