Silver Jewelry Buyback: How It Works

Published on 2026-07-21 · By Bertrand Mathieu

Inherited, outdated or broken jewelry, silverware gathering dust in a drawer: solid silver objects have a real resale value. You just need to understand how it is calculated to get a fair price. Here is how the buyback of silver jewelry works.

What creates the resale value

At buyback, a single principle counts: the weight of fine silver contained in the object, valued at the day’s price. In practice, two parameters:

  1. The grade925 silver (92.5%), 800 (80%)… The higher the grade, the more fine silver there is.
  2. The weight — precisely weighed, excluding stones and non-silver elements.

The metal value = silver price × (weight × grade). The buyer then applies a markup, which gives the buyback price. The cosmetic condition does not enter into it: a broken piece is bought back at the same grade as an intact one.

Solid required: plated is worth nothing by weight

Careful: only solid silver has a resale value. A plated object (thin layer of silver on base metal) or “métal argenté” has no usable metal value. So the first step is always to verify the grade — see solid vs plated silver and solid silver hallmarks.

How an appraisal unfolds

  1. Grade verification: reading the hallmark (Minerve head, etc.), touchstone or instrument test.
  2. Weighing: on a precision scale, with non-silver elements removed.
  3. Calculation: weight of fine silver × day’s price − markup.
  4. Buyback offer, with no obligation.

A free preliminary estimate (even remotely) gives you a ballpark figure before any trip.

Getting the best price

  • Compare the markup, not just the advertised price: at equal metal price, it is the markup that makes the difference.
  • Group your items: jewelry, cutlery and silverware, coins — all of it is valued by weight of fine silver.
  • Keep the original items (cases, certificates): useful for coins or branded jewelry.
  • Follow the silver price: the metal value depends directly on it.

Jewelry or bars: the same logic

Whether you sell jewelry, silverware or silver bars, the buyback logic is the same: weight of fine silver × price, minus a markup. Bars and investment coins simply sell closer to spot (less lost craftsmanship).

In summary

  • The buyback is calculated on the weight of fine silver × day’s price, minus a markup.
  • Only solid silver (925, 800) has value; plated does not.
  • Condition does not count: broken or intact, same grade, same metal value.
  • Compare the markup and group your items to optimize.
