How to Spot a Fake Silver Bar

Counterfeit silver bars do exist, especially on second-hand and online markets. The good news: silver has precise physical properties that are hard to imitate all at once. Here are the simple tests to tell a genuine bar from a fake.

1. Official weight and dimensions

Every bar from a recognised refiner has standardised dimensions and weight. A fake with a less dense core metal has to be bigger to reach the right weight, or lighter for the same size. Always compare the bar with the manufacturer’s official specifications (length, width, thickness, mass). Any discrepancy, however small, is suspicious.

2. The density test

This is the most reliable test. The density of silver is 10.49 g/cm³. Using Archimedes’ principle (weighing dry then immersed), you calculate the actual density. A result far from 10.49 gives away a core metal (copper ≈ 8.96; lead ≈ 11.34). It is almost impossible to reproduce both the weight and the volume of silver with another metal.

3. The magnet test

Silver is non-magnetic (very weakly paramagnetic). A powerful magnet should neither stick nor be clearly attracted. If it sticks, there is iron or steel: it is a fake. Be careful, though: the absence of a reaction does not on its own prove authenticity (copper and lead are not magnetic either). It is an eliminatory test, not a proof.

4. The sound test (“ping”)

Pure silver produces a clear, long ringing sound when you make it chime (for example by balancing it on a finger and tapping it gently with another coin). A base metal gives a dull, short sound. Collectors use this “ping test” as an additional clue.

5. The ice test (conductivity)

Silver is the best thermal conductor of all metals. Placed on an ice cube, a genuine silver bar makes the ice melt abnormally fast where they touch. It is spectacular and hard to fake, even though it remains a qualitative indicator.

6. Hallmarks and the seal

Check the refiner’s logo, the weight, the fineness (999) and the serial number. The hallmarks on a bar must be crisp, well aligned, without burrs. A bar in its original seal (certified blister) with an LBMA certificate is the safest. Some refiners offer digital authentication (PAMP’s Veriscan).

7. When in doubt: professional appraisal

For a valuable bar, nothing replaces the eye of an equipped professional (precision scale, XRF spectrometer, sound check). A serious dealer systematically verifies authenticity before any buy-back, a safeguard for you as much as for them.

The best reflex: buy at the source

Prevention remains the best protection: buy from a recognised refiner or dealer, insist on the seal and certificate, and keep your invoices. A bar whose origin is traced almost never raises authenticity issues.
