Has your silver ring, chain, or flatware turned dark? Don’t worry: it’s a natural and reversible phenomenon, and above all it is not a sign that your silver is fake. Here’s why silver tarnishes and what it means.
The real culprit: sulfidation
Silver reacts with the sulfur present in its environment. A thin layer of dark-colored silver sulfide forms on the surface: this is what’s called tarnishing (or patina). It’s not rust (silver doesn’t rust) or dirt: the metal underneath remains perfectly intact.
Contrary to a common belief, silver that darkens is not a fake — on the contrary, it’s actually typical behavior for genuine silver. “Silver” that never tarnishes may well be hiding a plated or base metal.
The causes of darkening
Several factors speed up sulfidation:
- Air: humidity and atmospheric sulfur compounds.
- Skin: sweat, pH, and certain medications change the rate of tarnishing from one person to another.
- Cosmetics: perfumes, creams, and hairsprays contain harsh compounds.
- Certain foods: egg, onion, and sulfur-rich foods (especially for flatware).
- Household products and chlorinated water (swimming pools).
That’s why the same chain darkens quickly on one person and slowly on another: it all depends on exposure.
Is it a problem? No
Tarnishing is superficial and reversible. A suitable cleaning restores all of silver’s shine, with no loss of material. The full method is in how to clean silver (special cloth, baking soda + aluminum bath).
Tarnishing does not affect the buyback value: that depends on the purity and weight of fine silver, not on the surface appearance.
How to slow down darkening
- Store your jewelry away from air (anti-tarnish pouch, closed box).
- Remove it before showering, swimming, exercising, or applying perfume.
- Wear it regularly: natural friction limits the patina.
- Separate silver from other metals in storage.
In summary
- Silver darkens through sulfidation (a reaction with sulfur in air, skin, and cosmetics).
- It’s neither rust, nor dirt, nor a sign of a fake — quite the opposite.
- It’s superficial and reversible with a suitable cleaning.
- Tarnishing does not affect the buyback value (purity × weight × price).
