Silver Necklace: Fineness, Styles, Care and Value

Published on 2026-07-22 · By Bertrand Mathieu

The silver necklace transcends trends: understated or statement, it suits every style. Before buying — or having an old necklace appraised — here are the useful pointers on fineness, lengths, care and value.

Fineness: aim for 925 silver

Most silver necklaces are made of 925 (sterling) silver, meaning 92.5% pure silver, the jewelry standard. A hallmark (Minerve head, French 925/950 hallmark) near the clasp confirms it — see silver jewelry and solid silver hallmarks. Be wary of “silvery” (plated) necklaces, which have no buyback value.

Necklaces, chains and long chains: the styles

  • Fine chain: understated, worn alone or layered. See our guide to chain links.
  • Choker: close to the neck, a modern look.
  • Long chain (sautoir): long, worn single or doubled.
  • Pendant necklace: the chain showcases a pendant.
  • Worked-link necklace (royal link, ball link…): more material, more presence.

Reference lengths

  • 40–42 cm: choker;
  • 45 cm: the most common length, sits on the collarbone;
  • 50–55 cm: over the neckline;
  • 60 cm and up: long chain.

The price of a silver necklace

The price combines the metal value (silver price × weight of pure silver), the workmanship and the margin. A fine necklace has little metal value; a thick link weighs more. Gauge the metal value with the silver price.

Caring for your necklace

Silver tarnishes naturally through contact with skin and air: this is reversible (why silver tarnishes). A special silver cloth revives it without scratching; a gentle bath cleans grimy links (how to clean silver). Store it away from air to space out cleanings.

Selling a silver necklace

A solid silver necklace is bought back at weight of pure silver × current price, whatever its condition — thick links are worth more. The process is detailed in selling your silver jewelry.

In summary

  • Aim for 925 silver (Minerve hallmark near the clasp); avoid plated.
  • Reference length: 45 cm; adapt to the style (choker to long chain).
  • Price = metal value + workmanship; care with a special cloth against tarnishing.
  • Solid silver is bought back at the weight of pure silver at the current price.
