Silver Pendant: Styles, Fineness and Care

Published on 2026-07-23 · By Bertrand Mathieu

A silver pendant personalizes a necklace in an instant: symbol, initial, stone or medallion. Here is how to choose it, pair it with the right chain and care for it so it keeps its shine.

Fineness: 925 silver

Like most worn jewelry, a silver pendant is generally made of 925 silver (92.5% pure silver), attested by a hallmark. A “silvery” (plated) pendant mimics the look without any buyback value — see silver jewelry.

Pendant styles

  • Symbols: cross, tree of life, infinity, heart, zodiac sign…
  • Initial / letter: simple, timeless personalization.
  • Medallion: round, engravable, often given as a gift.
  • Stone-set pendant: silver set with a stone (natural or synthetic).
  • Photo pendant / keepsake locket: to open.

Pairing it with the right chain

The pendant is worn on a suitable chain or necklace:

  • a light pendant goes with a fine chain;
  • a large pendant calls for a sturdier chain (thick link) for balance and security;
  • check that the bail (the pendant’s ring) lets the chosen chain pass through.

Price and value

The price depends on the metal value (price × weight of pure silver), the work (design, setting) and the margin. A stone-set pendant costs more due to its mount and stone, but the stone does not count toward the silver buyback value. Gauge the metal value with the silver price.

Care

The pendant tarnishes like any worn silver (why silver tarnishes). Clean it with a special cloth; for a stone-set pendant, prefer a gentle bath of lukewarm soapy water rather than a chemical bath (how to clean silver).

Resale

A solid silver pendant is bought back at weight of pure silver × current price (excluding stones and non-silver elements). Group it with your other jewelry for the appraisal — see selling your silver jewelry.

In summary

  • A silver pendant is most often 925 (hallmark); avoid plated.
  • Pair it with a chain suited to its weight; check the bail.
  • Price = metal value + work; the stone does not count toward silver buyback.
  • It tarnishes normally; solid silver is bought back at the weight of pure silver.
